:: BVSD & BCSM ATC Program

The Boulder Center for Sports Medicine works in partnership with Boulder Valley School District to provide one full-time certified athletic trainer to each of Boulder Valley's six major high schools. The certified athletic trainers provide sports medicine care to over 6000 student athletes each year.  They attend practices and games, making sure that student athletes are well prepared and well taken care of in case of injury.

What is an Athletic Trainer?  A certified athletic trainer (ATC) is a highly skilled and nationally certified health care provider.  ATCs work with physicians and other allied health professionals to provide medical care--both acute and chronic--for all levels of athletes from high school to professional.  Certified athletic trainers have, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree, usually in athletic training.  Athletic trainers study human anatomy and physiology, rehabilitation, biomechanics, exercise physiology, athletic training, nutrition, health and sport psychology.  ATCs undergo extensive training in clinical and professional settings.  This education and training allows the certified athletic trainer to administer immediate emergency care.  Afterwards, a treatment plan for injuries ranging from acute ankle sprains to torn ACLs is developed under the supervision of a team physician.  A large focus of the athletic trainer is prevention of injuries and overall conditioning of the athlete.

Your Athletic Fees At Work:  Each athlete who participates in High School sports pays a fee and a portion of that fee helps to fund their school's athletic trainer.   Here is what you get for your fees:

  • Fully Equipped Training Room
  • Access to treatment and rehab of injuries with modalities that include Ultrasound & E-Stim, as well as Hot Packs, Taping, Ice, and Deep Tissue Massage.
  • Your ATC can work in conjunction with your athlete's own care providers, by treating them in the training room at your school, which ultimately reduces missed school time and reduces health care costs for your injured athlete.
  • Your ATC can serve as a liason between coaches, parents and care providers in an effort to make sure the athlete is participating safely in their sport after an injury.
  • Your Trainer will provide coverage for home events with top priority given to sports with the highest rate of injury.
  • Your Trainer travels with some varsity teams to away events whenever possible.
  • Your Trainer is available before sporting events to provide ice, taping, or treatment to help get you back on the field or in the game as safely as possible.
  • Your Trianer can help you with referrals for additional treatment if needed.
  • Your Trainer works in conjunction with Boulder Center for Sports Medicine and can help you get in to be seen usually within 24-48 hours post injury.  There are sports medicine providers, physical therapists, and massage therapists who can offer priority scheduling at Boulder Center for Sports Medicine if you are referred by your High School Athletic Trainer.

Support Our Program:  The Boulder Community Hospital Foundation is the fund-raising arm of the hospital dedicated to making the High School Outreach program even better!

Charitable gifts to the Foundation are used to provide sports medicine care to Boulder Valley student athletes. Join us in supporting the outreach program and making a positive difference in the lives of others.
